| This enumeration of bare geographical and topographical facts reminds one a little of the description of a man in his passport or identity card. Although he is described in a few notes as unmistakably as possible, nevertheless one knows virtually nothing about him. Certainly, one may assume that a mountain rising to an altitude of more than 3,281 ft and encircled by its rolling foot-hills can be a lovely scene, and that the deep valleys cut into its falling shoulders and shaded by ancient fir woods are extremely attractive. But how little all that informs us of its singular beauty and less still of the political, economic and cultural history of these central mountains of Germany! The Harz has hundreds of thousands of visitors coming all the year round. Like a magnet it draws these visitors from far and wide, and far beyond Germany‘s frontiers — especially in the Scandinavian countries — the Harz ranks as one of the finest destinations to which a journey for pleasure or health can take one. On what does its renown rest? Since when has it counted as a paradise for holiday-makers? | Diese Aufzählung nüchterner geographischer und topographischer Gegebenheiten erinnert ein wenig an die Beschreibung eines Menschen im Reisepass oder Personalausweis. Er wird zwar mit wenigen Angaben möglichst unverwechselbar beschrieben, dennoch weiß man eigentlich nichts von ihm. Gewiss, man mag vermuten, dass ein Gebirge, das sich umgeben vom Kranz seines welligen Vorlandes – aus der Ebene bis zu über 1000 Meter Höhe erhebt, landschaftlich sehr schön sein könne und dass die in die abfallenden Ränder des Gebirges tief eingeschnittenen, von uralten Fichtenwäldern überschatteten Täler voller Reiz seien. Aber wie wenig ist damit über die einzigartige Schönheit oder gar die große politische, wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Vergangenheit dieses deutschen Mittelgebirges gesagt! – Zu jeder Jahreszeit wird der Harz von Hunderttausenden von Fremden besucht. Einem Magneten gleich zieht er den Fremdenstrom an sich, und weit über die Grenzen Deutschlands hinaus – besonders aber in den skandinavischen Ländern – gilt der Harz als eines der schönsten Ziele für eine Erholungs- und Vergnügungsreise. Worin ist dieser Ruf begründet? Und seit wann gilt der Harz als Ferienparadies? |
